Abstract

Objective :

1) To develop and psychometric property testing of Thai Geriatric Mental Health Assessment (T-GMHA). 2) To determine the convergent validity between T-GMHA and short form of of WHO Quality of Life scale-Thai version (WHOQOL-BRIEF-THAI).

Method :

A tool development and psychometric property testing study design was conducted between January-December 2013, which was divided into 3 phases. Phase 1 was expert panel meeting to aggregate items for T-GMHA. Phase 2 was the study of content validity and try out cognitive test. Phase 3 was the study of construct validity, normative and convergent validity. The sample of 1,489 living in city and subdistrict municipality of Muang district, Khon Kaen province. They were selected by using purposive sampling technique, according to inclusion criteria. The study of construct validity and norm were defined by using factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The study of convergent validity was using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.

Results

: The T-GMHA had 56 items, with 4 domains (consisting of mental state, mental capacity, mental quality, and supporting factors) and 15 subdomains. The score were divided into 3 groups: better than average mental health (above 75th percentile as 182), average (between 75th to 25th percentile as 181-160) and under average (below 25th percentile as below 160) mental health. The convergent validity with r=0.70 was

percentile as below 160) mental health. The convergent validity with r=0.70 was statistically significant (p<.001). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.94.

Conclusion

: The T-GMHA is a good psychometric property to evaluate the mental health of Thai geriatric population
