A Willingness to Pay for Service Improvement of Railway Authority of Thailand

Abstract

This paper aims estimating a willingness to pay for cleanliness and safety improvement on the second class passenger train in the State Railway Authority of Thailand. A contingent valuation survey was carried out during the period December 2013 to April 2014. From 900 respondents (600 Thais and 300 foreigners) on the second class passenger train, our results show that Thai passengers are willing to pay an extra fare of 296.80 baht per person for the cleanliness improvement on the second class passenger train. International passengers are willing to pay an extra fare of 527.10 baht per person. Regarding to the safety improvement on the second class passenger train, Thai passengers are willing to pay an additional fare of 241.02 baht per person. International passengers are willing to pay an additional fare of 387.07 baht per person.
