The sample sconsisted of two groups: 60 mothers or fathers and 60 preterm children aged 3-6 years, who received treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit and the neonatal special care nursery and visited the pediatric outpatient ward. Purposive sampling was employed with inclusion criteria.Data were collected from questionnaires on general information and assessments on executive functions for preschoolers known as the BRIEF-P. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze general data, and the relationships between the factors related to preterm preschoolers’ executive functions were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results revealed that the preterm children with gestational age less than 37 weeks had an overall executive-function score as normal.Furthermore, the 1-minute Apgar score and underlying diseases were found to be correlated with the working memory score in executive functions.Based on these findings, nurses and health care professionals who provide care to preterm children are advised to monitor them regularly, make recommendations, and encourage the development of their executive functions to ensure normalcy.
Keywords: BRIEF-P, Executive function,Preschool children,Preterm infant
Preawpan Sriyapai, Tipawan Daramas, Jariya Wittayasooporn Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/258254 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Factors Affecting Exclusive Breastfeeding in Preterm Infants Aged 4 Months https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/258647
Abstract

This predictive study aimed at in vestigating the predictive ability of attitude, subjective norm,andself-efficacy to exclusive breastfeeding during four months of age in preterm infants. The sample group was selected by purposive sampling according to the inclusion criteria of 77 dyads of mothers and preterm infants who visited the pediatrics outpatient department between February 2020 and August 2021. Data were collected by the instruments include five parts: the Demographic Characteristics of Mothers and Preterm Infant Questionnaire, the 24-hour Recall Questionnaire, the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (IIFAS), the Subjective Norm Questionnaire, and the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that self-efficacy in breastfeeding was the variable predicting exclusive breastfeeding in preterm infants at four monthsof age. This factor could explain the variability of exclusive breastfeeding at four months in preterm infantsat 25%. Therefore, nurses should advise and encourage mothers of preterm infants to have self-efficacy in breastfeeding to help mothers be able to breastfeed.
Keywords: Breastfeeding, Exclusive breastfeeding,Preterm infant,Self-efficacy
Sumalee Pingwung, Tipawan Daramas, Jariya Wittayasooporn Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/258647 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Risk Factors of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection in a Tertiary-care Medical Center https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/259479
This retrospective study aimed to identify the catheter-associated urinary tract infection rate and risk factors among patients admitted to a tertiary-care medical center in Bangkok.Participants included 994 patients with indwelling urinary catheters from October 1 to December 31, 2020. The research instruments comprised a personal information form and a urinary catheterization data collection form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis. Results revealed that the catheter-associated urinary tract infection rate was 5.67 per 1,000 catheter days, 21.11 and 4.39 per 1,000 in private medical wards and the intensive care unit, respectively. The logistic regression analysis model revealed that factors predicting catheter-associated urinary tract infections were gender, heart failure, infection of other body parts, and urinary catheter days. These variables could jointly explain the variance in catheter-associated urinary tract infections by 39.20%.Participants with infection of other body parts had the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections 14.46 times significantly compared with those without infection when controlled for variables of gender, heart failure, and catheter days. Also, a 1-day increase in catheter days significantly increased the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections by 7% after controlling for other variables. Therefore, healthcare professionals should closely monitor patients requiring long-term indwelling urinary catheters and infections of other body parts. Re-evaluating the reasons for indwelling urinary catheters is necessary to reduce the riskof catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
Keywords: Indwelling urinary catheter, Infection rate, Risk factors, Urinary tract infection
Parunee Wongsri, Sodsuay Thongmaha, Nipaporn Butsing, Sumawadee Skuntaniyom, Asita Wongprikorn Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/259479 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 The Effect of a Health Literacy Promotion Program on Cardiovascular Disease Preventive Behaviors Among Persons with a High Risk of Cardiovascular Disease https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/261244
Abstract: The objective of this quasi-experimental research was to investigate the effect of a health literacy promotion program on cardiovascular disease prevention behaviors among persons with high risk of cardiovascular disease. The sample consisted of 62 high-risk persons with cardiovascular disease, divided into a control group and an experimental group, each of 31 participants selected by purposive sampling. The experimental group received usual nursing care and the health literacy promotion program for eight weeks and the control group received only usual nursing care. The health literacy promotion program was developed using Nutbeam’s health literacy concept. The tools used for data collection were the Personal Information Questionnaire, the Cardiovascular
Prevention Behavior Questionnaire, and the Health Literacy Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test. The results revealed that after the experiment, the mean scores of cardiovascular disease preventive behaviors among the experimental group were significantly higher than before receiving the program and significantly higher than those in the control group. The results of this study demonstrated that the health literacy promotion program resulted in the improvement of cardiovascular disease preventive behaviors. The program can be used as a guideline for nursing practice to prevent cardiovascular disease in persons with a high risk of cardiovascular disease in the future.
Keywords: Cardiovascular disease preventive behaviors, Health literacy, High risk of cardiovascular disease
Teeranut Waisayarat, Umaporn Boonyasopun, Karnsunaphat Balthip Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/261244 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Self-Care Behaviors of Medication Use and Medication Use Problems in Old-Old People with Chronic Diseases https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/261433
This descriptive study aimed to explore self-care behaviors of medication use and medication use problems in old-old people with chronic diseases. Orem’s self-care theory was used to guide the study. The sample consisted of 107 people aged 80 years and over diagnosed by doctors with hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus in Surat Thani Province.Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data, which were then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that nearly half of the sample used services and received medications from subdistrict health promoting hospitals more than other service sources. Most of them (82%) could administer self-medication by recognizing the appearance, color, packaging, name, and medication use methods. They could read, write, or mark the name on the medication case. However, almost all of the sample (90%) did not check the expiry date of medications. Each participant kept medications in different locations or containers associated with their daily life. For medication management, when the doctor stopped prescribing some medications, most participants returned them to the hospital, but some disposed of them. Almost 20% failed to adhere to the doctor’s regimen, including the frequency, dose, and type of medications. Less than half of those who had experienced adverse drug reactions to the medications visited the doctor before the follow-up appointment. The remaining observed their symptoms first; if there were no severe side effects, they would visit the doctor as the previous appointment. This study revealed self-care behaviors of medication use and medication use problems in old-old people with chronic diseases. These results could be used as basic information to develop interventions for promoting appropriate self-care behaviors of medication use and minimizing adverse effects in older people with chronic diseases.
Keywords: Chronic diseases,Medication use,Medication use problems,Old-oldpeople,Self-care behaviors
Sureeporn Santaweesook, Porntip Malathum, Nuchanad Sutti Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/261433 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Factors Affecting Health Behaviors among People with Spinal Cord Injuries https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/256516
This predictive research design aimed to investigate predictability of selected factors to explain health behaviors among people with spinal cord injuries. The PRECEDE-PROCEED Model was used as a conceptual framework to guide this study. Purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria was used to recruit a sample of 150 people with spinal cordinjuries.Four self-administered questionnaires were used in data collection: the Demographic Data Form, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Social Support Questionnaire, and the Health Behaviors Scale.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that social support and self-esteem were significantly positively related to health behaviors among people with spinal cord injuries. There were no relationships of age and education to health behaviors among them.Social support and self-esteem jointly explained 23%of the variance in health behaviors among people with spinal cord injuries.Social support was the strongest predictor of health behaviors. Our findings suggest that nurses should promote social support and self-esteem to enhance health behaviors among people with spinal cord injuries.
Keywords: Health behaviors,Self-esteem,Social support,Spinal cord injuries
Dalin Rattanasuk, Warangkana Saripan Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/256516 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Workplace Violence and Workplace Violence Prevention Guidelines for Professional Nurses at a Tertiary Hospital https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/259023
This mixed-method research aimed to explore the situation of workplace violence, develop workplace violence prevention guidelines for professional nurses, and examine the feasibility of applying the guidelines in a tertiary hospital. The sample of the first phase, studying the situation and needs, consisted of 304 professional nurses who had worked for at least one year. The second phase, developing the guidelines, included 51 professional nurses who had experienced workplace violence, and 55 personnel were recruited in the third phase to examine the feasibility of applying the developed guidelines. Data were collected using the Workplace Violence among Professional Nurses Questionnaire, the Feasibility of Applying the Guideline Questionnaire, and probing questions for focus group discussion and in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenological method. The findings about the situation of workplace violence revealed that 16.78% of professional nurses experienced workplace violence within the past one year. Workplace violence included psychological violence (6.91%), physical violence (2.63%), and sexual violence (1.31%).The causes of workplace violence consisted of personal factors: uncontrollable anger, aggressiveness, anxiety, upset, dissatisfaction due to cutting queues, unsuitable room, workload assignment, and environmental factors:inappropriate service behavior of personnel. The workplace violence affected mostly professional nurses’psychological well-being.Secondly, the developed workplace violence prevention guidelines included reducing working alone, limiting visitors to patients, installing a closed-circuit television system, and developing a training program for workplace violence management. Lastly, participants agreed that the developed guidelines could be implemented in their hospital at a high level. The hospital administrators can use the findings to develop workplace violence prevention guidelines and strengthen a safety working environment for medical personnel.
Keywords:Professional nurses, Violence prevention guidelines,Workplace violence
Isara Srithong, Premruetai Noimuenwai, Suchinda Jarupat Maruo Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/259023 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 The Effect of the 5A Self-management Program on Dyspnea in Persons with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/263324
This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effect of the 5A self-management program on dyspnea in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at a tertiary-care hospital. A purposive sample of 60 persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease aged 40 years and older participated in this study. They were divided into a control group (n = 30) receiving usual care and an intervention group participating in the 5 A self-management program. The group characteristics were
matched in terms of gender, age, and severity of dyspnea. While the control group received usual care, the intervention group participated in the 5A self-management program synthesized from Glasgow et al.’s 5A model and Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease guidelines. This eight-week program included five approaches:Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist, and Arrange. The research instruments included the Personal and Treatment Data Questionnaire, the Dyspnea Assessment Questionnaire, and the Dyspnea Management Behavior Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The findings revealed that after the program, the mean dyspnea score of the participants in the intervention program was significantly less than that before the program and the control group. Therefore, the 5A self-management program could help persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease manage themselves appropriately and reduce their breathing difficulties.
Keywords: 5A self-management, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Dyspnea
Rachen Sutho, Sunida Preechawong Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/263324 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 An Evaluation of the One-Stop Nursing Service for Smoking Cessation in Persons with Non-Communicable Diseases https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/259076

Smoking is an important risk factor for developing non-communicable diseases or chronic diseases. So, an easily accessible smoking cessation service system should be established, and health personnel should give advice and help smokers quit smoking as part of their regular work. This descriptive research aimed to evaluate a one-stop nursing service system to help quit smoking in persons with chronic diseases. The one-stop nursing service project evaluation used Stuffelbeam’s CIPP model to guide the study. The samples consisted of two groups: 30 nurses participating in the one-stop service and1,340 persons with chronic diseases and smoking.Data collection instruments consisted of a project evaluation form,a personal information record form, and a smoking record form. Data were analyzed using content analysis and descriptive statistics. The results revealed that the hospital and nursing administrators made efforts to put the smoking cessation policy into practice.Nurse administrators managed context and inputs and paid attention to the nursing practice process for smoking cessation.Brief intervention and motivational interviewing techniques were provided to enhance nurses’potential to assist with smoking cessation. During the nursing service process, nurses and nurse administrators met regularly, and the nurse administrator listened, helped solve problems, and encouraged them to work. This performance allowed the project to continue and follow up on persons who intend to quit smoking. The nursing service system that produced good results was that it had nurses specialized in smoking cessation working collaboratively with nurses in the clinics, all at one-stop service. It was found that persons with chronic diseases and smoking visited the outpatient clinics of seven hospitals.Almost all participants were male (94.70%),with an averageage of 58.29 years. Most nurses helped persons with chronic diseases quit smoking by using brief advice and
counseling combined with Thai herbs. The successful quitting rate was 35.88% within six months and 43.62% within one year, which is higher than the key performance indicatorof 20%. The study results showed that the nursing service system to help quit smoking is comprehensive as a one-stop nursing service at clinics. Adjustment of a one-stop nursing service system can increase assistance for persons with chronic diseases in quitting smoking. It isworth promoting hospitals to have a policy to help people access smoking cessation through a one-stop nursing service. Nurses should be encouraged to receive training to help quit smoking in persons with chronic diseases using services in hospitals. Expanding training on smoking cessation to other personnel in the hospital is essential.
Keywords: Brief advice and counseling,Motivational interviewing,Non-communicable diseases, One-stop nursing service system,Smoking cessation
Orasa Panpakdee, Apinya Siripitayakunkit, Suda Sornpet, Suporn Yurapan, Sineenart Nawsuwan, Sarapee Kowan, Chutima Jiairaviboon, Hathairatana Chaiduang, Nareuchit Jansook Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/259076 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Sexual Function among Male Patients with Myocardial Infarction after Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Case Study https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/262327
Sexual dysfunction in patients with acute myocardial infarction is caused by changes in the blood circulatory system to the peripheral organs, including the sex organ.Primary percutaneous coronary intervention is an effective treatment and evidence-based standard of care for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. However, the residual pathology with vascular complications after the procedure, especially the femoral arteries, may lead to impaired sexual functions, especially in male patients, that are erectile dysfunction, decreased orgasm, or abstaining from intercourse while maintaining a high level of sexual desire. Anxiety, fear, symptom exacerbation during sexual intercourse, treatments, and comorbidities may lead to sexual dysfunction and interfere with the enjoyment of sexual activities. Sexual health problems are found to be untreated or unaddressed at discharge, and they may negatively affect physical recovery, emotional well-being, and intimate partner relationships. This article provides basic knowledge about sexual functions in male patients, nurses’ roles, guidelines for the assessment of the sexual function problem, teaching and giving advice, sexual relation counseling, monitoring possible symptoms during sexual intercourse, and early management of symptoms. The nurse can apply this information to their clinical practice to promote sexual function in male patients with acute myocardial infarction after primary percutaneous coronary intervention.
Keywords: Acute myocardial infarction, Percutaneous coronary intervention, Sexual function
Jirapong Srithep, Noraluk Ua-Kit Copyright (c) 2023 Nursing Research and Innovation Journal http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/262327 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Editorial Note https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/266852
Editorial Note
Supreeda Monkong Copyright (c) 2023 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/RNJ/article/view/266852 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0700
