Abstract

This article aimed to review the status of Nursing research in Thailand since its first inception in 1967 up to present. Nursing Research development in Thailand can be divided into 4 phases; Phase I: Research for Nursing education and administration development (1968 – 1980); Phase II: Research for Nursing practice (1981 - 1993); Phase III: Research for Nursing professional development (1994 - 2005) and (4) Research for Nursing system reform (2006 - present).  Thai Nursing research can be grouped into two models according to their purposes of study, namely, research aiming at Nursing knowledge development and research in response to public health problems and needs. The author addresses the more explicit and clear picture of putting acquired nursing knowledge into specific health actions. Future mission of Thai nursing research needs to include (1) Nursing research agendas must be responsive to health problems and issues in all aspects, i.e., structural-based, population-based, area-based, sociocultural-based, gender-based and future-based; (2) Balancing between research aiming at nursing knowledge development and public-health responsiveness must be encouraged; (3) Research conceptual framework must be derived from Thai perspectives as well as from outsiders, perspectives; (4) Multidisciplinary – nature, program-based and multi-setting research are strongly recommended more than ever before; (5) National nursing research agenda should be revised at 5 year intervals in order to catch up with the rapid changes in local and global scene and; (6) Nursing research impact toward  policy setting and implementation must be carried out systemically and regularly.
