Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to study residents’ opinions on Buddhist monks’ roles in public welfares in Roi Et province’s Mueang district, 2) to compare the former’s such opinions with differences in their genders, ages and educational levels and, 3) to examine the former’s suggestions for such opinions. It was the mixed method research. Quantitatively, the sampling group earning subjects with simple random sampling comprised 379 household heads/representatives living in that district. The research instrument was Likert-type questionnaires, in which each of question except for open-ended ones had its reliability at .82. Statistics used for the research embraced: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and F-test (One-way ANOVA) by setting the statistical significance level at .05. Quantitatively, the target group garnering subjects with purposive selection included fifteen community leaders. The research instrument was the structured interview.

Results of findings: 1) Residents’ opinions on Buddhist monks’ roles in public welfares in that district have been rated ‘high’ in the overall aspect, as has each of three aspects taken into account in descending order of means, which each of them are spiritual development, local development, and artistic and cultural promotion. 2) The hypothesis testing results have confirmed that the former’s differing genders, ages and educational levels show no significant differences at .05 level in such opinions, thereby not being conducive to the set hypotheses. 3) Residents’ suggestions for Buddhist monks’ roles in public welfares have been offered in descending order of three frequencies. First, Buddhist monks in all temples should run campaigns for support of spreading drug-related knowledge to residents and hold pre-emptive activities against taking drugs. Above all, under no circumstances must all temples be free from drugs. Next, they should publicize sermons in a bid to let residents understand dharma that enable them to realistically apply it to be beneficial for leading their ways of present life. Last, they all should encourage their young followers in their communities to realize the importance of arts, cultures and local folk wisdom in order to cherish ancestors’ preceding heritages
