Abstract

This research is a qualitative study of the percussion and wind instruments of Tai Yai music of Taunggyi Province, the capital of Shan State. Its objectives are to study the musical instruments of the traditional Tai Yai musical ensemble as well as their performing techniques and melodies. The research found no wind instruments in Taunggyi Province while the percussion instruments are used in Jard Tai musical ensemble. Only one musical ensemble of this type exists, namely, the Jard Tai ensemble of Baan Nong Morn Village in Sisaeng District of Taunggyi Province. It was founded by a group of adult musicians in this village and has been in existence for over 36 years. At present, the ensemble has approximately 30 members and is headed by Khru Jai Khamlang. It performs for fees at various merit -making ceremonies and traditional functions in the Province and its neighboring areas. A variety of musical instruments that make up the Jard Tai ensemble of Baan Nong Morn Village are, for example, Pattana, Mong Vang, Mong Khaeng, Toryor Horn, Chao Long Pad, Gee Hork Saeng and Klong Zee To. Its performing techniques are influenced by Burmese musical styles because the areas in which it operates lie to the South of Shan State near Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar. Living in the capital of Shan state, residents of Taunggyi Province are business-oriented and are not serious custodians of the unique styles of Tai Yai music. Taunggyi Province’s ethnic diversity has also produced a combination of Burmese-style melodies and Tai Yai lyrics. Nong Morn Baan Hao (Nong Morn, Our Homeland) is the signature overture of Bann Nong Morn Jard Tai ensemble. However, members of Bann Nong Morn Jard Tai ensemble cannot make their living as full-time musicians alone and must become agriculturalists such as rice farmers or maize growers.
