Factors related to effects of workplace violence among nurses in primary care hospital, Samut Prakan Province

Abstract

This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Its objective is to investigate relationship between working conditions, organizational policies for prevention and management workplace violence, socials support and effect of workplace violence among nurses in a primary care hospital. The study subjects were 168 nurses who work in the primary care hospital, Samut Prakan Province. All data were collected by questionnaires from April to June 2017 and were analyzed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient test. Results revealed that most of them were female 97.0%, average age was 32.7 years old and had experience for 12.7 years in average, mainly work in inpatient department (42.3%) and most violence is perpetrated by relatives of patient (85.1%). An effect of violence to physicals in low level and an effect of violence to feeling on the event and attitude in medium level. Moreover correlation study revealed that working condition, organizational policies for prevention and violence management in workplace and social support were significantly associated with the effect of violence to feeling on the event and the effect of violence to attitude (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). For suggestion the hospital administrator and healthcare workers should use the relationship factor to determine policies and systems for prevention and violence management in workplace in every department of the hospital together for reducing the effect of violence level by focusing on working conditions improvement, policies determination for prevention and violence management in workplace and social support for workers.
