Abstract

Music therapy is the field of the therapeutic use of music based on evidence-based clinical practice and research that aims to enhance development and abilities in cognitive, language and communication, physical, as well as social and emotional domains regarding the needs of individuals by a certified music therapist. Music therapy plays an important role in special education as a related service to increase and support the learning of students with special needs in order to accomplish the IEP goals. Thus, the music therapist is a key individual with the responsibilities to assess the students, identify goals, and design music therapy interventions to meet individual students’ goals that lead to achievement in special education. The purpose of this article is to present the key subject matter on the role of music therapy in special education in order to provide understanding to music therapists, music teachers, special education teachers, parents, and others who have important roles in developing and improving the learning of students with special needs. There are various topics presented in this article including the basic knowledge of music therapy, music therapy as a related service in special education, music therapy in the IEP process, the model of music therapy service, and the role of music therapists in special education.
