Abstract

The research aimed to study the politeness strategies in questioning and the social factors influenced the selection of the strategies the hosts used to ask their guests. Then compare both issues: the strategies and social factors that were founded in Pechrama: Talk to Solaida Salwala and Tai Orathai by Mr. Nawat Itsaragrisil and The Late Show: Talk to Hillary Clinton and Jessica Biel by Mr. Stephen Colbert. The framework of politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1978, 1987) was applied for data analyzing.

The research found that there were 4 strategies of politeness in questioning the hosts used: on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. These four strategies were applied to the guests differently based on social status of the guests, age, and level of closeness.
