ความหมายของชื่อเมืองในภาคตะวันตกของจีน

Abstract

  บทคัดย่อ

          ชาวจีนมีความเชื่อเรื่องการตั้งชื่อที่เป็นสิริมงคลรวมถึงชื่อสถานที่ ชื่อเมืองในระดับมณฑลของประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนจึงมีความหมายที่เป็นสิริมงคลเช่นกัน บทความนี้จะอธิบายชื่อเมืองในภาคตะวันตกของจีน จำนวน 94 เมือง ใน 11 มณฑล และ 1 เทศบาลมหานคร พบว่าสามารถจัดกลุ่มชื่อเมืองตามความหมายที่มาของชื่อได้เป็น 10 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ ความหมายสิริมงคล เลี่ยงสิ่งที่ไม่เป็นสิริมงคล  ภูมิศาสตร์ ทิศทาง สถานที่  ภาษาอื่น  บุคคลหรือกลุ่ม  พืช  การปกครอง  และ ตำนานหรือเรื่องเล่า อย่างไรก็ตาม ชื่อเมืองบางชื่อมีที่มามากกว่าหนึ่งกลุ่มโดยสัมพันธ์กับโครงสร้างของชื่อเมือง  งานศึกษานี้สะท้อนให้เห็นความเชื่อเรื่องการตั้งชื่อสถานที่ของชาวจีนว่าให้ความสำคัญกับความหมายและที่มาของชื่อจึงนำมาตั้งเป็นชื่อเมืองนั้น นอกจากนี้การตั้งชื่อเมืองหลายเมืองที่มาจากภาษาอื่นสะท้อนให้เห็นความหลากหลายของผู้คนที่อาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณภาคตะวันตกของประเทศ โดยเฉพาะชื่อเมืองหลายเมืองที่มีที่มาจากภาษาธิเบต ภาษาอุยกูร์ ภาษามองโกล ภาษาจ้วง ย่อมหมายถึงชาวเมืองเป็นกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่พูดภาษานั้นอาศัยอยู่

 Abstract

Chinese people have strong belief in having auspicious names; this includes names of places and provincial cities in China. This article aims to provide explanation for origins of auspicious names of cities in western China. The samples include 94 city names from 11 provinces; the auspicious names can be categorized into 11 groups: (1) auspicious meaning, (2) avoidance of inauspiciousness, (3) geography, (4) direction, (5) places, (6) people or  group of people, (7) animals or plants, (8) governance, (9) legends or tales, and (10) names derived from foreign languages. Nonetheless, some city names come from many different origins which also have close relation with the structure of the city.

The result of the study reflects Chinese strong belief in auspicious names for Chinese people pay a lot of attention to the meaning and the origin of the names. Moreover, some city names are derived from foreign languages; this reflects diversity of local people living in the western region of the country. Some names are originated from local ethnic groups which have been residing in the region and speak the languages, for example, Tibetan, Uyghur, Mongolian, and Zhuang.
