This research aimed to study the components of musical ability through the perspective of piano students who participated in piano competitions. In this study, qualitative research methodology of case study was used. The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with key informants, including nine piano students who received the award of winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up in the piano competitions, and completed graded music examinations. The research findings revealed that the components of music ability among these students consisted of the internal components which were musical skills (playing instrumental and communication of the music) and psychological traits for music (commitment to music, organization, and sensibility to music); and the external components that included the music teacher and family. This study contributes to a better understanding and more clarity about musical ability from the perspective of students learning piano.
