Abstract

This study investigated the generality and problems on doing science project of upper secondary school students in Princess Chulabhorn’s college, Thailand. A total of 240 students from 8 schools of Princess Chulabhorn’s college, who were studying in Mathayomsuksa V and had experience on doing a science project in the academic year 2013, were the samples of this study by using stratified random sampling. The research instrument was the generality and problems on doing science project of upper secondary school students questionnaire created by the researcher. The results of the study were as follows:

                1. Most of the students think about the issues on doing science project by themselves with 79.60 percent of students. Students’ science project issues mostly come from natural environment and direct experiences of students with 79.60 percent of students. In reviewing literature, students will study from the websites with 95.00 percent of students. More than 85.00 percent of students study from the websites about science projects and related research institutions. In the process of writing proposal, students will plan a science project together as a group and write the proposal follows the school pattern with 94.20 percent of students. The equipment used mostly come from science laboratories in schools with 78.80 percent of students. Moreover, most of students use their own money for doing the science projects with 87.00 percent of students. Students mostly work on their projects after school with 86.70 percent of students and write a science project report by themselves with 87.50 percent of students.

                2. Students’ responses toward the problems on doing science project revealed that most of student lack of attention and inspiration to do science projects with 64.20 percent of students. Students lack of skills to use some scientific instruments with 62.30 percent of students. Students lack of the skills to write a project proposal and report with 56.70 percent of students. They also lack of suitable scientific instruments for doing science projects with 56.70 percent of students and advisory specialists with 55.40 percent of students. The resources for doing science project was another concern of the students with 55.00 percent of students. In addition, the project advisers did not have enough time to give students advices in every step of doing the project with 31.70 percent of students.
