The purposes of this dissertation were to study and analyze the fundamental counselor characteristics in Thai context for students in the project of producing basic education of teachers of bechelor’s degree (five years curriculum) and construct a training model for the students under study. The sample population consisted of fourth-year students of education faculty of Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University. The sample population consisted of fourth-year students of education faculty of Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University. They were divided into two groups. A first group consisted of 260 fourth-year students using the stratified sampling method. A second group consisted of 24 fourth-year students. The sample random sampling method was thence used to divide these subjects into an experimental group and a control group of 12 members each. Statistical techniques used for data analysis were confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA).
The results of the study were as follows. (1) Applying CFA, the researcher tested the five-factor model for the fundamental counselors were loving kindness, empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence and genuineness. All of these factors were found to be congruent with empirical data and could be used in measuring the fundamental counselor characteristics in Thai context. (2) A training model for developing the fundamental counselor characteristics in Thai context.
