Abstract

Learning management in the maternal-newborn nursing and midwifery II course was offered to fourth-year undergraduate nursing students. In the past, this course could not achieve students to fully understand risk conditions during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period, especially when teaching-contents went beyond normal pregnancy and delivery. Literature has revealed that learning management with mind mapping has been an effective technique in facilitating students to review learned knowledge and build bridges between simple and complex contents.  Therefore, the researchers were interested in studying the effectiveness of mind mapping in knowledge development of student nurses.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the learning management using mind mapping in the maternal-newborn nursing and midwifery II course offered to fourth-year undergraduate nursing students’ batch 57 of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nakhon Ratchasima.  Sample consisted of 130 students. Data were conducted between July 2014 and September 2015.

Research instruments comprised the learning management with mind mapping, the demographic characteristics questionnaire, the achievement test, and the satisfaction with learning management questionnaire.  Data were analyzed by descriptive statistic and content analysis.

The study findings revealed that: 1) After implementation of learning management with mind mapping, 96.92% of the participants passed the examinations at first attempt and the result of the achievement test was equal to 60% or higher. 2) Overall, the participants had a high level of satisfaction, with the mean of 3.81 (SD= 0.80).

It can be concluded that learning management with mind mapping enabled the students to understand complicated contents in nursing and midwifery, and to successfully achieve learning outcomes.  It also enhanced the students’ satisfaction with their learning.  Thus, this teaching technique should be utilized to further improve learning management.
