นับได้ว่าโทรศัพท์มือถือเป็นปัจจัยที่ 5 ในการดำรงชีวิตของมนุษย์ มารดาที่เพิ่งฟื้นตัวจากการคลอดที่อยู่ในโรงพยาบาลมักใช้โทรศัพท์มือถือในการติดต่อสื่อสารกับบุคคลในครอบครัว ญาติพี่น้อง และเพื่อนๆ แต่หลังจากใช้โทรศัพท์ มารดามักจะวางโทรศัพท์ทิ้งไว้ใกล้ตัวทารกโดยเฉพาะบริเวณศีรษะโดยไม่คิดว่ากำลังมีคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าแพร่กระจายออกมาจากโทรศัพท์ไปสู่ทารกได้ ปัจจุบันได้มีการพิสูจน์แล้วพบว่าศีรษะเด็กสามารถดูดซับคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าจากโทรศัพท์มือถือได้มากกว่าผู้ใหญ่ ยิ่งเด็กที่มีอายุน้อย สมองยิ่งดูดซับคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าเข้าสู่เนื้อเยื่อสมองได้ลึกกว่าเด็กที่มีอายุมากกว่า ดังนั้นทารกแรกเกิดที่รอยต่อของกะโหลกศีรษะเชื่อมต่อกันไม่สนิท ทำให้มีกะโหลกศีรษะที่ไม่ปิดคลุม จึงเสี่ยงต่อการดูดซับคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าเข้าสู่เนื้อเยื่อสมองได้ลึกมากขึ้น

แม้การศึกษาต่างๆ ในขณะนี้ยังไม่สามารถสรุปได้ว่าคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าที่แผ่รังสีจากโทรศัพท์มือถือก่ออันตรายในระยะยาวหรือไม่ แต่กระนั้นองค์การวิจัยโรคมะเร็งนานาชาติ (International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC) ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยงานหนึ่งขององค์การอนามัยโลกก็ได้จัดรังสีคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าจากโทรศัพท์มือถืออยู่ในประเภทกลุ่ม 2 B คืออาจเป็นไปได้ที่จะเป็นปัจจัยเสี่ยงต่อการเป็นมะเร็งในมนุษย์ที่ต้องรอการพิสูจน์จากหลายงานวิจัยมารับรอง และในขณะที่กำลังอยู่ในห้วงของการรอพิสูจน์อยู่นี้  พยาบาลควรที่จะทำการป้องกันอันตรายให้แก่ทารกแรกเกิดที่ยังช่วยเหลือตัวเองไม่ได้ไว้ก่อน ทารกเหล่านี้ควรได้รับสิทธิ์และโอกาสของการได้เจริญเติบโตและพัฒนาการอยู่ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ปลอดภัยจากคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าที่มาจากโทรศัพท์มือถือ ดังนั้นการบริหารจัดการถึงวิธีการใช้โทรศัพท์มือถือด้วยมาตรการที่ปลอดภัยตามหลักการป้องกันไว้ก่อน (Precaution principles) จึงน่าจะเป็นวิธีการที่ดีที่สุด พยาบาลที่ปฏิบัติหน้าที่ในหออภิบาลมารดาหลังคลอดที่ส่งเสริมให้มารดาหลังคลอดอยู่กับทารกแรกเกิดตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง ควรเพิ่มบทบาทในการให้ความรู้แก่มารดาหลังคลอดถึงวิธีการใช้โทรศัพท์มือถืออย่างปลอดภัยด้วย
