Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of motivation interviewing (MI) on food consumption behavior among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Quasi experimental was conducted on 253 pre-dialysis patients age between 40-80 years old at internal medical clinic, outpatient department, Udonthani hospital. The research tool was 4 parts questionnaire which   consisted of: personal data form, knowledge on CKD diet, consumption behavior, and laboratory test report. The questionnaire was validated for content validity by professional experts. The reliability of questionnaire was reported by Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients of 0.832. Data from motivation interviewing were collected during July–November, 2018 and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and pair t-test. The results revealed that 61.30 % of the participants were female with the average age of 60.55 years, 52.20 % were diagnosed with CKD with the average duration of 7.53 years. The major cause of CKD was diabetes (68.4%).  Fifty point two percent of CKD patient had high score (6.82) in knowledge on CKD diet. The average medium score (12.73) of food behavior was found among CKD patients (64.40%).  Weight and fasted blood glucose level (194.57mg/dl) post-motivation interviewing consulting were significant (p<0.001) less than pre-motivation interviewing consulting (178.49 mg/dl) whereas eGFR level (60.77 mL/min/1.73m2) post-motivation interviewing consulting was more than pre-motivation interviewing consulting (56.10 mL/min/1.73m2). The motivational interviewing was the effective technique for doing counseling among CKD patients. It helps patients to change their unhealthy eating habit which resulted in positive health outcomes and improved quality of life of the patients.
