Abstract

Objective : To determine the prevalence and associated factors of depression in
pediatric patients with epilepsy at Ramathibodi hospital.
Method : A cross-sectional descriptive study was done in 92 patients with epilepsy
aged 10-18 years old and their caregivers who attended pediatric outpatient department
at Ramathibodi hospital during October to December 2017. Demographic, illness history,
family and psychosocial data were collected. Children’s Depression Inventory
(CDI) and Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to
assess the prevalence of depression in patients aged 10-15 years old and patients
aged 15-18 years old with epilepsy respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive
statistics, chi-square, and t-test.
Result : Regarding 92 pediatric patients with epilepsy, mean aged 14.56 years old
(SD = 2.75), the prevalence of depression was 22.85%. According to age groups, the
prevalence of depression was 28.3% and 17.4% in the patients aged 10-15 years old
and 15-18 years old respectively. Low maternal educational level (p=0.014) were
significantly associated with depression in patients with epilepsy aged 15-18 years old.
Conclusion : The prevalence of depression in 10-18 years old patients with epilepsy
was 22.85%. In patients aged 15-18 years old with epilepsy, low maternal education
was a psychosocial factor associated with depression. Effective multimodal treatment
approach should be developed for this group of patients including their families.
