Emotional Quotient of Medical Students at Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, Navamindradhiraj University
Objectives : To study the level of emotional quotient in different dimensions and associated
factors of emotional quotient among medical students at Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital,
Methods : A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on first to sixth-year medical
students in academic year 2016. General demographic data questionnaire and the EQ
evaluation form for Thai people aged 12-60 years which developed by the Department of
Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health were used. Data analysis used descriptive statistics,
chi-square test and one-way ANOVA.
Results : A total of 427 (89.52%) medical students who participate this study. Total EQ score
was in the normal range, only self-control subdomain was in the higher range. In the happiness
domain, percentage of medical students in the lower range was the highest of all three main
structures. Sixth-year medical students had highest EQ score and second year medical
students had the lowest. Statistically significant associated factors with EQ were year of study
and satisfaction with career choice as medical student.
Conclusions : Medical students had EQ score in the normal range and higher than normal in
self-control subdomain. Highest EQ score was among final year medical students and the
lowest was in second year. Year of study and satisfaction with career choice as medical student
were associated with EQ. Early EQ training in medical school was important especially in the
happiness domain should be more attention.
