Abstract

Objectives : To analyze and compare the differences and relationships between the interpretations
using the R-PAS and the Klopfer systems.
Materials and Methods : This study used the case study method. Rorschach responses of 10 patients
diagnosed with mental disorders by psychiatrists were interpreted using the Klopfer and R-PAS
systems. For the Klopfer system, only the quantitative analysis was used. For the R-PAS system,
the interpretive guides generated from the scores processed through the online system were used.
The data were analyzed for differences and relationships to find patterns in four areas: cognitive
processing, perception and thinking, stress and coping, and interpersonal relationship.
Results : With respect to cognitive processing, both systems provided information regarding the
application of intelligence but the R-PAS system provided additional information regarding the cognitive
process and nature. With respect to perception and thinking, both systems provided information
regarding reality testing including psychopathology but the R-PAS system provided additional
information on the quality of perception and thinking including severity of psychopathology. With
respect to stress and coping, both systems provided information relating to the tendencies for stress
and anxiety and reactions to situations but the R-PAS system provided additional information on the
risks for self-harm. With respect to interpersonal relationship, the Klopfer system emphasized
personality and the development of personality as related to relationships while the R-PAS system
emphasized the ability to understand self the others.
Conclusion : Interpretation of the Rorschach responses by the R-PAS system is different from the
Klopfer system whereby the R-PAS system can provide the information with increasing depth and
breadth. The R-PAS system also has well-defined criteria, using standard scores and normative data.
Therefore, the R-PAS system should be used in Thailand in order to better understand its strengths
and limitations.
