SELF-ESTEEM, SOCIAL SUPPORT, AND BULLYING BEHAVIOR AMONG JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

Abstract

Objectives: To compare self-esteem and social support among the victim of bully group, the bully group, the bully/victim group and the non-involved to bully/victim group in junior high school students.

 Methods: The samples were 527 students who were studying in grade 7 - 9 in the academic year 2015 from three schools in a province in the south under the office of the secondary education. The research instruments including general information questionnaire, bullying behavior questionnaire, self-esteem questionnaire, and social support questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and One-way Analysis of Variance.

Results: The results revealed that there are statistically and significantly different in three pairs of mean scores of self-esteem which are 1) the victim group and the non-involved to bully/victim group (p = .019, 2) the bully/victim group and the non-involved to bully/victim group (p < .001), and 3) the bully/victim group and the victim group (p < .001). In addition, the results revealed that there are statistically and significantly different in two pairs of mean scores of social support which are the bully/victim group and the victim group (p = .019), and 2) the bully/ victim group and the non-involved to bully/victim group (p = .007).

 Conclusion: Results from this study could be applied for developing programs to prevent bullying behaviors in junior high school students.
