Factors Related to Premenstrual Syndrome among Female Nursing Students

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common health problem among reproductive women. The purpose of this correlational descriptive research was to investigate PMS and factors related to PMS among female nursing students. The sample comprised 186 female nursing students selected by stratified random sampling. The data collection instruments were: Demographic Data Recording Form; Dysmenorrhea Scale; Suanprung Stress Test – 20; and Premenstrual Syndrome Scale. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, Spearman rank correlation coefficient, and Chi-square test. The results showed that all sample had at least one premenstrual symptom. The dysmenorrhea level had a statistically significant positive correlation with
PMS at the low level (rs = .148, p < .05). Stress had a statistically significant positive correlation with PMS at the moderate level (rs = .520, p < .01). There was no correlation between consumption of caffeine and PMS. Results from this study could be used to develop guidelines for prevention and relief of PMS among nursing students.
