The Effects of A Motivation-Enhancing Program For The Prevention of Illness on The Perceived Prevention of Cervical Cancer and Adherence to Follow-Up Colposcopy among Women with Abnormal Pap Test Results

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of a motivation-enhancing program for illness prevention. The samples consisted of 80 women with abnormal pap test results at Chulabhorn Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. The research instruments consisted of the following: 1) a motivation-enhancing program for disease prevention; 2) a VCD on the experiences of cervical cancer patients and preparation for pre-/postcolposcopy; 3)brochures on colposcopy; 4)a demographic questionnaire; 5)a perceived prevention of cervical cancer questionnaire 6) a follow-up colposcopy form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the chisquare test, Fisher’s exact test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results revealed higher means of perception in the experimental group than in the control group before and after participating in the motivation-enhancing program, with a statistical significance (p<.05). As well, the percentage of adherence to follow-up colposcopy was also higher in the experimental group than in the control group, also with a statistical significance (p<.05).
