Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to determine the effects of an adjustmentpromoting program on the stress management skills of mothers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The sample consisted of 60 mothers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, who were recruited using the inclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned to the control and experimental groups, with 30 subjects in each group. The experimental group participated in the adjustment-promoting program which comprised 8 sessions, once a week for 8 weeks. The control group received routine care. The research instruments were the following: 1) a personal data questionnaire; 2) the adjustment-promoting program; 3) and a stress management skills scale which determined the reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .89. The data analysis was performed through descriptive statistics and t-test.

The research findings were as follows: 1) The mean score on the post-test (M = 57.33, SD = 5.62) of participants in the experimental group after participating in the program was significantly greater than the pre-test (M = 41.30, SD = 5.29) (t = 6.41, p<.001) and 2). The mean difference of the mean score of stress management skills between the pre-test and post-test in the experimental group (gif.latex?\bar{D}_{1} =16.03  , SD = 6.85) was significantly greater than that of the control group that received routine care. ( gif.latex?\bar{D}_{2} = 0.50, SD = 3.82) (t = 5.42, p<.001). As a result of this study, it can be concluded that the adjustment-promoting program can enhance the stress management skills of mothers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and can be developed the adjustment-promoting program for other mothers or caregivers.
