The Effects of Health Risk Communication Program among Patients with Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy in a community Samut Sakhon Province

Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research two groups pre-post test design was to study the effects of health risk communication program among diabetic retinopathy patients. Rohrmann’s risk communication process was applied as a theoretical framework. The 34 sample were divided into an experimental and comparison group 17 of each. Data were collected from June to July,2018. The instruments comprised demographic data, Knowledge and behavior questionnaire to delay the severity of diabetic retinopathy.

The reliability was 1.00 and 0.80 respectively. The 6-weeks Health Risk Communication Program consisted of self-risk appraisal, risk communication, monitoring and evaluation. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Singed-Rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results revealed that the experimental group had a significant higher mean score of knowledge and behavior to delay the severity of diabetic retinopathy before receiving the program and also in the comparison group (p < .05). Based on the results, this program could be used for caring diabetes mellitus patients to delay the progression of diabetic retinopathy.
