Abstract

The Effect of a Self-Management Support Program on Body Mass Index, Behaviors in Controlling Metabolic Syndrome and Risks of Cardiovascular Disease among Police Personnel

This study is a quasi-experimental two groups pre-post test design. The research was designed to study the effect of a self-management support program on body mass index, behaviors in controlling metabolic syndrome and risks of cardiovascular disease among police personnel. The experimental group was designed to join the self-management support program for 12-week period, while the control group received general health care. The instrument used in this study consisted of the self-management support Program, personal data, behaviors in controlling metabolic syndrome and risks of cardiovascular Disease among Police personnel (CVI= .86 ,Cronbach’s alpha.76) .Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics independent t-test and paired t-test.The result showed that after implement program, the experimental group had significant higher mean score of behaviors in controlling metabolic syndrome than those of the control group (p<.01). Body mass index and risks of cardiovascular disease of the experimental group was significantly lower than those the control group. (p<.01). From the findings, nurses should adopt self-management support program that controlling metabolic syndrome in the future.
