Abstract

Smoking has become a major health problem in Thailand. Nurses have a key role to play in smoking cessation counseling. The purpose of this descriptive study was to psychometric testing of the smoking cessation counseling scale (SCCS) among Thai professional nurses. The study enrolled 120 Thai registered nurses from 34 provinces of Thailand. The SCCS was developed from The Smoking Cessation Counseling Scale. The content validity was validated by a panel of 3 experts. The Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient of overall scale was 0.95. The components of the instrument were analyzed by using principal components extraction with an orthogonal rotation and varimax method. The findings revealed that the SCCS was performed resulting in 3 components: 1) advanced counseling 2) basic counseling and 3) standard nursing care. The Cronbach’s alpha value, whereas the subscales ranged between 0.73 and 0.93, which explains 55.08 % of the total variance. The SCCS can be used for evaluation smoking cessation counseling of Thai registered nurses. It has psychometric reliability and validity.
