Abstract

Factors Predicting Health Status on Caregivers of Elderly People with Dementia

The present study aimed at investigating the predictive power of the factors influencing health status of caregivers of elderly people with dementia. The study sample consisted of 100 caregivers. Data were collected using the demographic characteristics questionnaires, the preparedness questionnaires, the help from the other questionnaires, the strain from direct care questionnaires, and the SF-12 Health suevey version 2. Descriptive statistics, Spearman Rank Correlation, and Multiple Regression Analysis were employed to analyze data and to determine the relationship among the study variables. The study findings revealed that caregivers had a rather low level of preparedness, direct role strain, and of the amount of help from others (Skewness = 0.165, 0.755 and 0.223), but had a rather high level of perceived health status. The analysis of the relationships among the study variables showed that preparedness was positively related to perceived health status with statistical significance at an average level (r = 0.412, p <0.05), roles strain was negatively related to perceived health status with statistical significance at an average level (r = -0.444, p < 0.05), but the amount of help from others was not related to perceived health status with
statistical significance at 0.05 level. Finally, both preparedness and direct role strain could predict perceived health status of caregivers of elderly people with dementia with statistical significance by 26% (R2 = 0.26, F = 17.027, p < 0.05). The study findings could be utilized to assess preparedness and strain from direct care guide a clinical nursing practice and a caregiver support program including caregiver’s care to prepare and decrease strain from direct care to enable caregivers of elderly people with dementia to maintain their good physical and mental health status to ensure quality of life.
