Abstract

ENERGY CONSUMPTION FOR DAILY TRAVELLING OF BANGKOKIANS WHO LIVE IN VARIOUS TYPES OF RESIDENCES

  By Trungjai Buranasomphob

The research focuses on the problems of energy consumption caused in part by the urban sprawl. As the Bangkok metropolis expands, more energy is needed for travelling thus the commuting costs increase. In order to obtain data relating to energy consumption, field surveys were conducted through the use of questionnaires and interviewing a sample of 300 households from the middle income group. The dwelling units occupied are under 3 different categories, that is, detached houses, townhouses/rowhouses, and condominiums located around Bangkok within the radius of 5-25 km. from the reference point at Rajprasong intersection.

Then a model was developed to estimate the amount of energy consumed in the process of commuting. The findings indicate that in all 3 dwelling types, commuters use private cars more than other modes of transportation followed by buses and motorcycles respectively. Other modes such as trains, boats, and bicycles are relatively of little use. Furthermore, it is also found that people living in detached houses use private cars more than those living in other dwelling types and tend to consume the most energy. Finally, some policies to induce people to minimize energy consumption are recommended.
