This predictive research aimed to examine predicting factors of decision-making ability of charge nurses, including job autonomy and emotional intelligence. A simple random sampling was used to recruit a sample of 81 nurses who were responsible as charge nurses in private hospitals. Data collection was carried out from September to October 2017.
Research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the emotional intelligence’s scale, the job autonomy’s scale and the decision- making ability questionnaire. Their reliability were .90, .91, and .95 respectively. Descriptive statistics and standard multiple regression were employed to analyze the data.
The results revealed that mean score of decision-making ability was at a high level
(M = 4.03, SD =.47). Emotional intelligent (Beta= .660) and job autonomy (Beta = .322)together accounted for 72.1% of variance in the prediction of decision-making ability of charge nurses. These findings suggest that nursing administrators should promote and support charge nurses in developing their emotional intelligent continually and provide freedom of job autonomy based on professional standard. Therefore, better decision-making ability of charge nurses would be achieved.
