Abstract

This experimental research aimed to study the effects of village health volunteers empowerment on perceived self - efficacy and caring behavior for persons with diabetes in community. Matching sampling was used to recruit 60 health volunteers in Tapong districts, Rayong province who met inclusion criteria.  They were assigned into experimental group and control group equally. The experimental group received six-week village health volunteer empowerment program elaborated by the researcher by assessing the problem, exchanging opinions and experiences, participating in decision making to choose appropriate behavior, summarizing problems, planning for caring diabetes patient in community, maintaining effective behaviors, and practicing with diabetes patient in community. The control group received routine  task assignment. Data were collect at pretest, posttest, and one month after receiving the program using questionnaires. The pre-test data collection consisted of both perceived self - efficacy and caring behavior, while perceived self - efficacy was collected immediately finishing the program, and caring behavior was collected 1 month after the experimental period. The descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and t-test were used for data analysis.

The results of study showed the difference of self – efficacy’s mean score in the experimental group was significantly more than the control group. ( t = 2.75, p(one tailed) < .05). The caring behavior’s mean score of the experimental group and the control group was not significantly different. (t = 1.36, p(one tailed) > . 05). Findings suggested that community nurses should apply this empowerment program to develop village health volunteers for enhancing their self – efficacy perception so to be able to provide care for persons with diabetes in community.
