Abstract

The objectives of this study were to: 1) review the history of Piphat Duk Dam Ban and  2) analyze its performing patterns. This study focused only on the performances of Piphat Duk Dam Ban at Chulalongkorn University from 1985 to 1987 and from 1989 to 2016.   The findings revealed that with the initiative of Professor Emeritus Punpit Amatayakul, M.D.  to preserve Piphat Duk Dam Ban, Chulalongkorn University launched a project about Piphat Duk Dam Ban in 1985 to commemorate the fifth cycle birthday of King Rama IX and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Chulalongkorn University in 1987. According to the resolution of the 1/1985 meeting, the Center of Arts and Culture Promotion whose honorary president was Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn has organized dances for 30 years. The dances could be classified into 5 categories; 1) 9 dances granted by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn, 2) 9 Tableaux Vivants, 3) 5Duk Dam Ban dramas, 4) 10 dances staged in Duk Dam Ban drama, and 5) 11 well-wishing dances.  The performance of Piphat Duk Dam Ban held at Chulalongkorn University is considered the preservation of Piphat Duk Dam Ban as the performance strictly followed what it was first performed during the reign of King Rama V.  In addition, the preservation means the students at this university being able to study this art and pass on this knowledge to the next generation.
