Abstract

Abstract: Objective:To compare levels of pain perception in music-therapy-treated and non-music-therapy-treated school age children having received bone marrow aspiration.Design:Two-group quasi-experimental research with a pre-test and a post-test. Implementation:The sample subjects consisted of 60 school age children aged between 7 and 12 who met research criteria. The subjects had received diagnostic or prognostic bone marrow aspiration at the adolescent ward of Maharaj Nakhonrachasima Hospital and were required to undergo a haematological procedure at the out-patient department of Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health. The subjects were equally divided into a control group and an experimental group, the former given normal nursing care and the latter given music therapy in addition to normal nursing care. The instruments used consisted of a general information recording form and a Modified Visual Analogue Scale (MVAS) pain-assessment form. The data were analysed using and independent T-test. Results:The members of the experimental group showed a significantly lower average level of bone marrow aspiration pain (t = 6.028, p < .001) than did the subjects in the control group. Recommendations:It is suggested that nurses employ music therapy as a means of distraction, in order to reduce perception of pain in school age children having received bone marrow aspiration.
