Abstract

 abstract

Pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infectious disease most commonly found
in Thai infants and children aged up to 5 years. One of the most commonly prescribed
medications is a small-volume nebuliser, which relieves bronchospasm. In addition to
medication, family-centred care plays an important role in enhancing multi-dimensional
care quality for this group of patients, responding to their physical, psychological and
psychosocial needs.
This article aims at presenting a nursing innovation designed to enhance caregiving
quality for child pneumonia patients treated with a small-volume nebuliser. By applying
the family-centred care approach, this case study adjusted caregiving strategies to ft
individual patients’ needs, taking 4 main factors into consideration, namely, each family’s
strength, differences between families, individualism and needs for caregiving cooperation
support. The study was conducted in 4 steps, which may be abbreviated as EFFE: (1)
Empowerment; (2) Family-professional collaboration and participation; (3) Family
as a leader and for self-monitoring; and (4) Evaluation of the caregiving method.
The trial revealed a signifcant increase in the patients’ families’ knowledge,
skills, participation and satisfaction in response to this innovative family-centred
caregiving model. In addition, the child patients cooperated better and more willingly,
and displayed improved respiratory response.
