Abstract

“Using comparative proportions in the human figurative sculptures” is a part of the study for dissertation fulfillment entitled, “Father’s life, the protection from his child”. Under the concept of having a child bring joy and secure a parent’s life, the artworks were expressed through the proportion adjustment. By shaping the child’s size bigger and the father’s size smaller than the actual sizes, the sculptures were set in the actions that the child was pleasantly taking care of his father.

The selected artworks for this study related to the comparative proportions were created by four sculptors as follows; [1] Michelangelo Buonarotti’s Pieta of St. Peter’s powerfully emphasized the shapes by means of enhancing the Virgin Mary’s size and accentuated the human weakness via reducing the Jesus Christ’s size. [2] Nonthiwat Chandhanaphalin’s Father and Child was expressed via the ordinary proportion of father and child (7.5: 5); hence, it was exaggerated twofold to reiterate its significance and to install in the public outdoor space properly. [3] Charles Ray’s Family Romance expressed the weirdness of sexual relationships in American families by choosing the figures of father, mother, daughter and son, and resizing them equally in 125 centimeters to present the new family relationship. And [4] Toss by a female artist Nina Levy represented the importance of the child towards his family members through his gigantic size while keeping the regular size of the parents. All of these artworks by the sculptor masters are beneficial in exploring a new way for “Father’s life, the protection from his child” creation.

As a result, this study has found the new means of using comparative proportions which are (1) exaggerating the child’s proportion and (2) downsizing the father’s proportion. This supports the idea that having a child makes the parent’s life safe and sound. For this reason, the child figures were created larger to enhance his strength of caring and protecting his little father.
