Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics of surreal human representation paintings as well as to examine the process of creating such paintings under the framework of semiotic system. The researcher employs an analytical research methodology to 161 pieces of human painting of Thaweesak Sritongdee, selected from 14 sets of his solo exhibition during 1999 - 2011. The researcher sets the purpose of this research paper as follows:

1. To study Thaweesak Sritongdee’s human painting creation practices

2. To analyze the meaning of Thaweesak Sritongdee’s human representation paintings

The research finds out that

1. The presentation process of Thaweesak Sritongdee’s human representation paintings does not come from his subconscious mind; rather it is created through two layers of thoughtful consideration and arrangement procedures. This process begins with the interpretation of things in his brain, and subsequently presents to the outside, by connecting the inner and outer with the semiotic system. Such presentation is not a direct process, but it is a distorted one to create a meaning that the artist puts into his process of creating human representation painting. The artist gathers all self-meaningful elements and composes them on a limited space of canvas to create a story that he wants to communicate, by relying on the meanings of selected virtual elements and organizing them into an important subject so as to act as a sign.

Nonetheless, the correlation between an image and its meaning is unsettled and uncertain because it depends on specific rule of the artist and the interpretation of each audience. Therefore, the artist mainly chooses to exhibit his representation in the form of setting a question to his audience.

2. By analyzing the meanings of Thaweesak Sritongdee’s 161 pieces of human representation painting selected from 14 sets of his solo exhibition during 1999 – 2011, the researcher finds out that there is a connection between the meanings of desire to be free from social conventions. The artist has a constant idea of questioning why humans cannot be free from all social rules, myths, norms and powers. Only if such freedom is possible, humans will be entirely free from all conflicts and competitions. However, in reality, the artist is well aware that such degree of freedom is impossible and does not exist in the real world.

Therefore, the significance of presenting and creating human representation painting of Thaweesak Sritongdee is a reflection of human’s hope and dream of absolute freedom.
