Abstract

This study aims to 1) explore the characteristics of cultural capital of the Thai Song Dam ethnic group in Nakhon Pathom Province, and 2) to study the cultural capital of the Thai Song Dam ethnic group for community development. As a qualitative research, this community-based study used Ban Ko Raed Village, Bang Pla Sub-district, Bang Len District, in Nakhon Pathom Province as its main study area as well as other areas in the same province for further information about social and cultural contexts such as Ban Phai Hu Chang Village, Phai Hu Chang Sub-district, Bang Len District; Ban Hua Thanon Village, Don Phutsa Sub-district, Don Tum District; Don Thong Village, Don Thong Sub-district, Kamphaeng Saen District; and Ban Laem Kachao 2 Village, Lam Luk Bua Sub-district, Don Tum District, in Nakhon Pathom Province.

According to the findings, it was found that the characteristics of the cultural capital in the study area existed in three forms, namely embodied state, objectified state and institutionalized state. First, the embodied cultural capital included value and worth of ideas, knowledge, beliefs, values, attitudes, capabilities and intelligence. Second, the institutionalized cultural capital comprises the value and worth of behavioral patterns in the forms of customs, traditions and rites, as seen in cultural groups in the communities, within which cultural capital has been adopted for community development from one generation to the next. Presently, in terms of community development in Ban Ko Raed Village, the cultural capital is more adopted directly to achieve monetary ‘value’, resulting in changes of original cultural capital, the emergence of modern advancements, and, in some cultural groups, loss of local culture; and partially affecting the natural resources and environment of the communities. Therefore, for the sake of self-adaptation, the community members are required to adopt their local culture in order to keep the existence of their community in balance. This paves the way for establishing guidelines for community development in the economic, social, cultural, natural-resource-related, and environmental aspects. Subsequently, these guidelines will transform either value or worth into a dynamic force, enhancing community happiness and strength, and empowering community members in a balanced and sustainable manner.

As a result of these findings, three suggestions can be offered. First, in terms of governmental policy, the importance of the cultural dimension should be emphasized for national development. Second, in terms of policy implementation, cultural capital should be used as a means for community development through an actual participatory approach and process. Third, in academic terms, further research on cultural capital in other ethnic communities could be more promoted.
