Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of the self-foot massage using coconut shell on perceived foot fatigue (PFF), toe grip strength (TGS), and heart rate variability (HRV). Sixteen sedentary healthy subjects, aged 23.56 ± 1.41years, were randomly grouped by receiving either self-foot massage first or rest (control) first and then swab to receive another with 7.94 ± 1.12 days washout period(crossover study). For massage group, the subjects performed self-foot massaged using a coconut shell for 5 minutes whereas the control group rested in sitting position for the same time period. After inducing for foot muscle fatigue by prolonged standing, PFF, TGS, and HRV were measured before and immediately after each intervention. The results showed that there was a significant decrease PFF in massage group and control group respectively (72.44 ± 14.26 vs 15.63 ± 8.09 millimeters and 70.5 ± 13.79 vs 27.81 ± 13.23 millimeters) (p<0.05) and significant increase TGS in massage group and control group respectively (18.67 ± 4.94 vs24.92 ± 5.93 kilograms and 19.46 ± 4.49 vs21.93 ± 5.36 kilograms) (p<0.05) when compared between before and after the intervention. At post intervention, between-group comparison revealed significant difference in PFF(15.35 vs 28.09 millimeters; Standard error (SE)=2.6) when compared between massage and control group respectively (p=0.002) and TGS (25.28 vs 21.56 kilograms; SE=.93) when compared between massage and control group respectively (p=0.008). However, there were no significant differences in HRV when compare within group and between group. We concluded that self-foot massage using coconut shell could decrease PFF, and increase TGS in sedentary healthy subjectsafter induced foot fatigue.
