Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM), a metabolic disorder, is basically characterized by high blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) and low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). Currently, evolution of DM treatments is advanced. There are different types of oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs) which have their own advantages and disadvantages. The proper prescription of OHAs for diabetic patients is thus required with considerations of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics as well as side effects of each agent. For this, rational drug use of OHAs is needed to reduce side effects and medical expenses from overlapping prescriptions. Therefore, health professionals must make medical plans for DM management, rational drug use, and enable patients and families to understand disease and drug use that leads to health behavior adjustment, optimal blood sugar control and better quality of life.
