Abstract

The purpose of this quasi experimental study was to examine effect of sexual communication skill of mothers with early adolescent daughters based on individual readiness. Tools included 1) sexual communication handbook, and 2) comprehensive instructional program in VCD. These tools developed on basis of factual information in communication, sexual communication skill development, and self-practice in 16 issues including personal hygiene, interpersonal relationship, gender role, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), birth control, pregnancy, and abortion. After that, sexual communication handbook and comprehensive instructional program in VCD were developed. The VCD presents the true story of 3 mothers and their daughters on title “Believing in One Day” length 13 minutes. Sexual communication handbook (70 pages) includes content with personal context, and easy to understand verbal communication. These tools were executed in 90 mothers, the mothers were selected from 3 communities (1 community/group): Group I sexual communication handbook (30 mothers), Group II comprehensive instructional program in VCD (30 mothers), and Group III both handbook and VCD (30 mothers). The studied variables included perceived sexual communication skill self-efficacy, feeling comfortable toward sexual communication, and sexual communication. The internal consistency were measured by Cronbach alpha (α>.70). Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA with Post hoc (Bonferoni). The level of significance was .05.

The results showed that handbook and VCD influenced change in perceived sexual communication self-efficacy (F (2, 87) = 4.13, p-value =.019) and feeling comfortable toward sexual communication (F(2, 87) = 5.34, p-value=.006), but no influence on sexual communication practice. Specifically, VCD increased perceived sexual communication self-efficacy (p-value < 0.05), whereas handbook promoted feeling comfortable toward sexual communication (p-value < .05).

Sexual communication learning through sexual communication handbook and comprehensive instructional program in VCD under stage based intervention is likely to increase perceived sexual communication self-efficacy and feeling comfortable toward sexual communication.
