This research and development aimed to develop and evaluate a model of objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) in practicum of nursing care of persons with mental health problems subject. The population and sample of this study were 3rd year nursing students, Boromarajonani College of Nursing Bangkok. The development process included 4 phases: 1) design and develop OSCE model, 2) try out the OSCE model, 3) arrange and evaluate OSCE for the first time in academic year 2016, and 4) arrange and evaluate OSCE for the second time in academic year 2017. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and content analysis. The findings of this study were as follows:
The developed OSCE model comprised 4 steps: 1) preparation, 2) design test scenario, 3) arrange OSCE, and 4) evaluation OSCE. The evaluation revealed that the OSCE model could evaluate differentiate clinical skills of students individually. The overall satisfaction to the OSCE score were
level (mean = 3.90, SD = 0.61). When classified by items, it found that the students satisfied at highest scores on enhance to understand their weak points related to clinical skills (mean 4.21, SD 0.64), following by nursing practice with regardless of ethics, morals, or patient right (mean = 4.13, SD = 0.53), the OSCE can evaluate their communication skills (mean = 4.10, SD = 0.63), the preparation of OSCE stimulate their reading (mean = 4.10, SD = 0.61), and help them to more understand knowledge related to nursing care of persons with mental health problems (mean = 4.10, SD = 0.58), respectively. The finding indicates that OSCE model is effective for evaluating clinical skills in practicum of nursing care of persons with mental health problems subject.
