Factors Influencing Fruit and Vegetable Consumption among Grade 6 Primary School Students in Bangkok Metropolitan

Abstract

Fruit and vegetable consumption are the important factors promoting growth and development for school-age children. This study aimed to find factors influencing on fruit and vegetable consumption among grade 6 primary school students in Bangkok Metropolitan. The samples were recruited of 185 students from grade 6 primary school students in urban school in Bangkok Metropolitan on academic year of 2017 by multi-stage random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires which including personal data of the sample, knowledge, attitude, fruit and vegetable accessibility, influencing from parent and friend, information, and fruit and vegetable consumption. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis.


            The results revealed that students reported having fruit and vegetable 4-6 day/week. Best significant predictor of fruit and vegetable consumption (FVC) ware food prepared by parent (PPP) (β = .376, p < .001), information about fruit and vegetable (INF) (β = .286, p < .001) and attitude of fruit and vegetable consumption (ATT) (β = .171, p < .01). However, the constant value was not significant for equation. They accounted for 31.8% (R2 = .318) in the prediction with significance level of .05. The prediction equation was:


            FVC   = 0.298 (PPP) + 0.244 (INF) + 0.188 (ATT)


            The findings of this study suggests that promoting fruit and vegetable information, those prepared of parent and enhancing positive attitude for fruit and vegetable consumption should be address in school-age children.
