Independent t-test

Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to examine the effect of a discharge planning program on diarrhea preventive behaviors of caregivers for children aged under five years old. A discharge planning concept of M-E-T-H-O-D developed by Bureau of Nursing, Ministry of Public Health was used as a conceptual framework. The sample was 30 caregivers of diarrhea children in  a private hospital, 15 per group. The experimental group received a discharge planning program and the control group received routine nursing care. Subjects were matched by education level, age, and their relation to children. The intervention consisted of five steps: 1) Problems and needs assessment for caring after discharge, 2) Identification of health problems and care needs after discharge, 3) Discharge planning for patients, 4) Implementation of discharge planning, and 5) Evaluation. Data were collected using diarrhea preventive behavior questionnaire. Its content validity index was 0.97 and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.89. Data were analyzed using dependent t-test and independent t-test.

It was found that:

  1. The mean score of diarrhea preventive behaviors of caregivers for children with diarrhea after receiving discharge planning program (mean =125.73 +8.63) was significantly higher than before receiving the program (mean =118.40 +11.36)  (t =-2.651, df = 14, p <0.05).
  2. The different mean score of diarrhea preventive behaviors of caregivers for children with diarrhea who received discharge planning program (d = 7.33 + 10.71) was significantly higher than that of the control group (d = 5.60 + 15.41) (t = 2.699, df =28, p < 0.05).
