Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 14-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

EDITORIAL POLICIES
The Editor-in-Chief of The Bangkok Medical Journal invitessubmission of manuscripts in all areas of medical research. As ageneral guide, manuscripts will be considered for publication if theycontribute significantly new findings to the health or medical field.Interested authors are invited to submit their manuscripts throughour Open Journal System (OJS). Manuscripts that are conformed toJournal’s scope and format will go through plagiarism check anddouble blinded peer review process before going for graphic designand final proof.

The Journal is published twice a year, available in February andSeptember and is designed for all physicians, researchers, and healthcare workers regardless of their specialties.

Mission
The Bangkok Medical Journal (ISSN 2287-0237 (online) /2228-9674 (print)) is a peer-reviewed journal published by BDMSFoundation for medical education and research. The primary goalis to serve as an educational tool for improved medical practices.The Bangkok Medical Journal accepts original articles dealing withclinical and laboratory medicine, clinical research, basic scienceresearch, and epidemiology. Publication Policy
  • The Bangkok Medical Journal does not accept articles whichhave been published or are being considered for publication byanother journal. Manuscripts that have been submitted to TheBangkok Medical Journal must not be submitted to other journals.
  • The Editor-in-Chief of The Bangkok Medical Journal makes decision on publication of submitted manuscripts with guidance of the policies governed by the Editorial board members.
 
Plagiarism
Intellectual property is a serious concern of the Journal. On submission, all articles are screened using the software ‘iThenticate’, which is supported by BDMS Foundation. Plagiarism is suspected if similarity rate is higher than 20%. In that case, the Editor-in-Chief will be immediately informed. Obvious plagiarism i.e. use of large portions of copied text or data or figures results in rejection while minor copying of short phrases leads to a polite notification to the authors for re-writing. If plagiarism is detected in the review process, all the process will be immediately withheld. The Editor-in-Chief will contact the corresponding author or all the authors, if necessary, for explanation. If the explanation is unsatisfied or any of the authors admit plagiarism, the manuscript will be rejected. After publication, if plagiarism is proven, the article will be retracted. All the authors’
affiliations will be contacted to explain the retraction. Relevant parties will be informed of the expected future behaviors. The action
of retraction will be officially announced as early as possible in the subsequent issue of the Bangkok Medical Journal.
 
Operations

Advertising Policy
To maintain academic integrity, The Bangkok Medical Journalallows only evidenced-based advertisement that contributes to medical advancement. Advertisers are responsible for obtaining approval for advertisement according to legislations of Royal Thai Government or relevant countries where the Journal is distributed to. The Bangkok Medical Journal does not accept advertisements that violate medical community standards, appeal any kind of discrimination or related to health hazards including alcohol, tobacco, firearms and any unsafe practices. Decision to accept or reject an advertisement is made by the Editor-in-Chief with guidance of the Editorial team and selected board members.
 
TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS
The following types of material may be considered forpublication:
1.Original Article: Original Articles are scientific reports of the results of original clinical research.
2. Case Report: Brief Reports usually describe one to three patients or a single family with an uncommon history or diagnosis or a treatment outcome.
3. Review Articles: Review articles are usually solicited by the editors, but we will consider unsolicited material. All review articles undergo the same peer-review and editorial process as original research reports. They should be written for the general physicians not specialists. Consequently, they may include material that might be considered too introductory for specialists in the field being covered.
4. Medical Images: Images in clinical medicine are classic images of common or unusual or rare medical conditions. This feature is intended to capture the sense of visual discovery and variety that physicians experience. Medical Images are not intended as a vehicle for case reports. Original, high-quality images are considered for publication (subject to editing and abridgment) provided they do not contain material that has been submitted or published elsewhere.
5. Letter to Editor: Letters to Editor provide a forum for readers to comment about articles recently published in the Journal, and they are a place to publish concise articles, such as reports of novel cases.
6. Book Review: Book review allows readers to learn overall content of selected books along with some scientific opinions of the authors who review those books. This helps readers to appreciate overall content before making a decision to go for thorough reading.
7. Special Features: Articles that do not fall into any above categories but are considered highly potential to contribute to advancements in medical or health communities will be accepted as Special Features.
 
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
Article Types

The Bangkok Medical Journal publishes specific type of articles. Each type serves a distinct and separate purpose and is judged by different criteria. Manuscripts should be constructed according to specific guidelines for Articles. To submit each type of manuscript for publication in the Journal, please follow the specific submission instructions at www.bangkokmedjournal.com

(1) General Style Guidelines
Manuscripts are to be submitted (and will be published) in English. Use international non-proprietary (generic) names when referring to drugs; avoid proprietary (brand) names.
(2) Manuscript Format
a. Critical Reviews and Invited Commentaries
  • Title Page (see Full-Length Original Research below)
  • Abstract and Keywords Reviews and commentaries should generally begin with a brief (less than 200 words) summary of the content. The summary (unstructured) should provide thereader with an abstract of the main points of the paper.
  • Abstract should be followed by a list of 3-6 keywords; please provide keywords that will assist in the indexing of your article (i.e., make it easy for individuals who are searching online to find your paper).
b. Full-Length Original Research and Brief Communications
* Title Page:
Includes the following information:
  • Full title of the manuscript
  • Authors’ names (first and last names, middle initial when commonly used by that author)
  • Institutional affiliation for each author (use super-scripted numbers after each author’s name)
  • Corresponding author: First and last names, middle initial when commonly used by that author; Address and Email
* Abstract
Full-Length Original Research reports should consist of four sections, labeled: Objective; Material and Methods; Results; Conclusion. This structured summary should concisely and specifically describe why and how the study was performed, the essential results, and what the authors conclude from the results.
* Keywords
Keywords are significant words in medical indexing.They are useful as a tool when researching for paper informationfrom lists of medical journals.
* Introduction
State the objectives of the study clearly and concisely, and provide a context for the study by referring judiciously to previous work in the area. Do not attempt to present a comprehensive review of the field. Provide a statement about the significance of this research for understanding and/or treating the concerned disease.
* Materials and Methods
Describe the research methods in sufficient detail that the work can be duplicated; alternatively, give references (if they are readily accessible) and comprehensive descriptions. Identify the statistical procedures that were used and the rationale for choosing a particular method, especially if it is not standard.
*Results
Results should be reported fully and concisely, in a logical order. Descriptive information provided in figure legends need not be repeated in the text; use the text, however, to describe key features of the figures. When appropriate, give sample numbers, the range and standard deviation (or mean error) of measurements, and significance values for compared populations.
* Discussions
Provide an interpretation of the results and assess their significance in relation to previous work in the field. Do not repeat the results. Do not engage in general discussion beyond the scope of the experimental results.
* Conclusions
Conclusions should be supported by the data obtained in the reported study; avoid speculation not warranted by experimental results, and label speculation clearly.
* Acknowledgements
All acknowledgements including financial support should be mentioned under the heading “acknowledgements”and not as footnotes on the first page or in the text.
* References
The Vancouver system of referencing should be used.  References should be cited numerically in the order they appear in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses or as superscripts. Names of all authors and editors should be given. In the reference list, the references should be numbered and listed in order of appearance in the text. Cite the names of all authors when there are six or fewer; when there are seven or more, list the first six followed by “et al”. Names of journals should be abbreviated in the style used in Index Medicus (see examples below). Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should not appear in the list but should be cited in the text only (e.g. A Smith, unpubl. Data, 2000).
Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references. In manuscript, please number the cited references in chronological order and superscript them at the end of the sentence. All references cited in the text (including those included in figures legends andtables) should be listed References. Start the References on a separate page, and arrange citations in the order that they appear order so that they will be in sequence with references cited in the text. List all authors when there are three or fewer; when there are four or more, list the first three, followed by “et al.”, title of the article, journal name (in italics use PubMed abbreviations), year of publication (followed by a semicolon), volume number (followed by a colon) and pages (first - last page numbers). Reference to electronic material should include author name(s), date, article title, and journal (as above); where volume and/or page numbers are not available, substitute Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number. Numbered references to personal communication unpublished data, or manuscripts either “in preparation” or “submitted for publication” are unacceptable.  If essential, such material can be incorporated at the appropriate place in the text.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
 
(1) Cover letter
All manuscripts should be submitted with a cover letter, addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, which explains why the manuscript should be published in The Bangkok Medical Journal. In particular, authors should identify novel findings,innovative approaches, and important insights that would make the manuscript of particular value to the readers of The Bangkok Medical Journal.
(2) Text, table and figure files
Every file should be given a label that includes the first author’s last name and the nature of the file.
 
MANUSCRIPT PUBLICATION
(1) Proofs
Proofs are mailed electronically in a PDF format, and must be returned within three days of receipt. Late returns of proofs will cause substantial delay in article publication. It is the corresponding author’s responsibility to see that the proof is accurately checked and corrected, and to return the proofs promptly to avoid publication delays. Please check the spelling of co-authors’ names, text, tables, legends, and references carefully.  It is the authors’ responsibility to make sure that the information is accurate. Indicate corrections either using the PDF editor functionor with clear hard-copy indications. The proof corrections stage is not the time for fine-tuning language or making any other substantive changes. Confine corrections to errors in printing; authors may be charged for major author-initiated changes.
(2) Public access of accepted/published articles
Public access of accepted/published articles: Prior to acceptance, articles may be shared (printed or electronic copies) with colleagues. After an article is accepted, authors may share printed or electronic copies of the article (accepted and revisedto address peer review) with colleagues, and may use the material in personal compilations with other publications of his/her own work, and for educational/research purposes. Articles published in The Bangkok Medical Journal are freely accessibleto the public - via website “www.bangkokmedjournal.com”
 
Submission Information
Once an author has prepared his/her manuscript that is conformed to the instructions for authors.

Go to www.bangkokmedjournal.com. First-time authors will need to register with our Open Journal Submission (OJS) before submitting his/her manuscript on “Submissions”. This will takehim/her to the online submission and peer review portal.

Follow the online instructions for filling out the submission form and uploading the manuscript.
The author may submit his/her manuscript using filling out the submission from and uploading your manuscript.

Review Process
  • The Bangkok Medical Journal publishes original contributions to the advancement of medical diagnosis and treatment. As a result submitted manuscripts must not contain previously published material and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
  • The Bangkok Medical Journal follows the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). The guidelines may be viewed at https://www.icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf
  • Manuscripts that do not conform to The Bangkok Medical Journal instructions for authors or exceed the Maximum for Articles’ Submitted to The Bangkok Medical Journal may be sent back to the author without review or put on hold until the submission is deemed in compliance with the requirements.
  • Manuscripts that conform to The Bangkok Medical Journal instructions for authors will go for plagiarism check.
  • With satisfactory results of plagiarism check, manuscripts will go to double blinded peer review process. Two to three reviewers review a manuscript depending on complexity of the manuscript without awareness of the authors’ identity. Comments and recommendations are shared with the authors with no informationon identify of the reviewers. The Editor-in-Chief makes final decision on publishing the manuscripts or other relevant actions according to recommendations of the reviewers. Occasionally, the Editor-in-Chief seeks for recommendations of the fourth reviewer.
Rights protection

The Bangkok Medical Journal emphasizes that for research involving human subjects, authors must express their compliance to Good Clinical Practices (GCP) guidelines. Certificate of Approval (COA) of relevant Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethics Committee (EC) must be presented along with submitted manuscripts of studies involving human subjects. In the absence ofthe Certificate of Approval, the authors have to convince the Editorial Board that the study did not violate any ethical concerns on human subject research.

Research involving animals must comply with institutional, national or internationally-accepted standards, and where available should obtain prior approval from their Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or appropriate ethics committee. The manuscript must include the name of the approval ethics committee and the standards that were followed.

The Basel Declaration outlines fundamental principles to adhere to when conducting research in animals and the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) has published ethical guidelines. Also the Weather all report on the use of non-human primates in research provides recommendations on non-human primate studies.

Publication ethics

Ethics of authors 

- Statements made in the article, including changes made by the Editor or English Language Manager, Once accepted by the author are the responsibility of the author and not of The Bangkok Medical Journal.

- Once an author is aware of a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her published work, it is the author’s responsibility to immediately notify the journal editor and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.

Ethics of editors

- All manuscripts are treated as confidential documents. The editor, editorial staff and editorial board must not disclose any information obtained from a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Ethics of reviewers

- Unpublished materials in all submitted manuscripts must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without an express written consent of the author(s).

- Ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential by the reviewers and must not be used for personal advantage.

Conflicts of interest

- All authors must declare or disclose, in the manuscripts, any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscripts. All sources of financial or other supports for the project must be disclosed.

- Reviewers must declare their conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the agencies companies, or institutions connected to the manuscripts they review. It is therefore the responsibility of the Journal to seek appropriate actions, including seeking more independent reviewers.
