Narrative and Ideology in Novel for ASEAN: Rak Nai Maan Fon

Abstract

This project aims to study storytelling and ideology in ASEAN novel which has "Raknaimanfon" novel as a study case. The research result shows that each element of the novel relates to tourism thoroughly. The author use tourism to run the plot. The main character is a Vietnamese tour guide. Also, the history of Vietnam War is mentioned in the plot. This past event has an effect on lifestyle and character of Vietnamese including the literatures that wrote during the war period. The story conflict eases up at the end of the travel. The main idea is to emphasize the understanding of culture, lifestyle, tradition, state of society, and important places in Vietnam. The secondary idea is about love and couple life. These ideas can be obtained from characters' experience during the travel. The main characters have variously characteristic such as well-rounded character, stereotyped character, static character and dynamic character. It is obvious that the author writes the story reasonably. The author presents the story by using the combination point of view between the first person and the omniscient third person, in which the thoughts of every character are open to the reader. The setting of the novel is very significant because it is from the places that exist in Vietnam. This is also to give details of the places and culture in Vietnam to attract people. The task of conversation is giving more detail of tourism in addition to running the story. The ideologies that can be seen in the novel are nationalism, moneyism, and localism
