Abstract

The purpose of this predictive research was to examine family factors influencing exercise and eating behavior among elderly with overweight. A multistage sampling method was used to select 150 elderly with overweight and their families in Muang district, Nakhon Pathom province. Research instruments used to collect data included questionnaires about demographic data of elderly with overweight and family functioning, family relationship, family support, family health belief and family health behavior. Statistics used to analyze data included frequency, percentages, means, standard deviations, Pearson product moment correlation, and multiple regressions.

The results showed that exercise and eating behavior among elderly with overweight were at a moderate level. Family health behavior and family support were significantly predicted exercise behavior among elderly with overweight and explained 31.7% of variance (Adjusted R2=.317, p < .001). Family relationship, family health belief and family health behavior were significantly predicted eating behavior among elderly with overweight and explained 31.9% of variance (Adjusted R2=.319, p < .001). The findings suggested that promoting exercise behavior among elderly with overweight should emphasize promoting family health behavior and family support. Promoting eating behavior among elderly with overweight should emphasize promoting family relationship, family health belief and family health behavior.
