Abstract

Some of adolescent mothers are unable to respond appropriately to their infants’cues. In addition, preterm infants themselves have limitations in showing clear behavioral cues that affectquality ofmother-infant interactions. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to compare feeding interaction of mothers and their preterm infants between the experimental group and the control group. Participants were 46 pairs of mothers aged 13-19 years, and their preterm infants whose gestational aged less than 37 weeks and who were admitted at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Sukhothai hospital, Sukhothai province. The study sample was selected based on the inclusion criteria, and divided into the experimental and the control groups of 23 pairs each. The mothers in the experimental group received information individually regarding response to preterm infants’ cues during feeding through computer media and manual. The mothers also practiced breastfeeding with their preterm infants and received feedback from the researcher. The mothers in the control group received routine nursing care. Data were collected by using the demographic data forms of the mothers and their infants, and the observation form of Feeding Interaction between Mothers and Preterm Infants. The video tape was recorded to evaluate feeding interaction of the mothers and their preterm infants. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and ANCOVA.

The study results revealed thatafter receiving the intervention, the adolescent mothers in the experimental group had higher mean score of feeding interaction of mothers and preterm infants than those in the control group with statistical significance (p<0.1). It is recommended that the information used in this study should be provided to adolescent mothers who have preterm infants in order to enhance feeding interaction with their preterm infants.
