Abstract

Patient triage at emergency department is a system for categorizing patient based on priority to be treated. Patient triage must be accurate to ensure safety of patient and appropriate use of limited resources. Nurses, who are responsible for patient triage at emergency department, have a crucial role for patient triage quality improvement. The Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle is a widely used quality improvement tool in health care system. This review article provides examples of applying the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle for patient triage quality improvement in four hospitals. Lessons learned from the provided examples are also discussed.
