Abstract

Breastfeeding has enormous benefits to mothers, infants, and families. Fathers also have a significant role in breastfeeding. The purpose of this descriptive research was to explore relationship among fathers’ knowledge, attitudes, and involvement in breastfeeding. The subjects were 102 first time fathers who were present for their infants’ 6-8 week check-up at the well-baby clinic, Health Promotion Hospital, Chiang Mai from July to September 2014. The research tools comprised of these questionnaires including the Father’s Knowledge of Breastfeeding Questionnaire, the Father’s Attitudes to Breastfeeding Questionnaire and the Father’s Involvement in Breastfeeding Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were used to analyze the data.

Results of study revealed that:

The majority of fathers were highly involved in breastfeeding. Fathers’ knowledge of breastfeeding was positively correlated with their involvement in breastfeeding (r = .27, p <.01). Fathers’ attitudes towards breastfeeding was positively correlated with their involvement in breastfeeding (r = .21, p <.05).

These findings suggest that fathers should receive knowledge about breastfeeding and positive attitudes toward breastfeeding should be enhanced which will result in their greater involvement in breastfeeding.
