Abstract

Acute respiratory tract infections are a common problem in children. Parents should have correct behaviors in preventing acute respiratory tract infections. This quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest design research aimed to examine the effects of protection motivation enhancement on parents’ behaviors in preventing acute respiratory tract infections within their children. The study was conducted during November 2014 to February 2015. The study samples were 52 parents of preschool children who attended two child development centers in Wiang Chai District, Chiang Rai. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group of 26 parents each. Rogers’s Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) was applied to the experimental group, while the control group received usual care. Study tools consisted of a protection motivation plan, a perceptions of acute respiratory tract infections questionnaire and a practices in preventing acute respiratory tract infections questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and the t-test.

The study results revealed that after the implementation of protection motivation, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score of practice than before getting implementation (p<.001), which was also significantly higher than the control group score (p<.05). The results of this study suggested that protection motivation enhancement could enhance parents’ behaviors in preventing acute respiratory tract infections in children. This strategy may be applied to prevent acute respiratory tract infections in children in other child development centers.
