Abstract

Cancer patients may experience serious issues including physical, psychosocial, and spiritual problems. While interventions for relieving cancer-related physical and psychosocial suffering have been studied, there are very few studies on the effect of interventions on the spiritual well-being of cancer patients. This quasi-experimental research aimed to test the effect of life review on the spiritual well-being of cancer patients. The purposively selected participants were  34 cancer patients who received health services at a provincial hospital. 17 participants were assigned to the experimental group and participated in life review intervention, while the other 17 participants were assigned to the control group and received usual care. The life review intervention was developed by the researcher and consisted of 3 steps including 1) building a relationship, 2) reviewing special events in the person’s life, and 3) summarizing the results of life review. Spiritual well-being was evaluated as an effect of life review. The Thai version of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being developed by Cella (2010) was used to collect data. Data were analyzed by using t-test.

          The study results revealed that:

  1. After participating in the life review intervention, participants in the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score of spiritual well-being than those in the control group (p<.05).
  2. Among participants of the experimental group, the mean score of spiritual well-being after participating in the life review intervention was significantly higher than before participating in the intervention (p<.05).

The findings of this study confirm the effectiveness of life review intervention among cancer patients. This intervention should be used in clinical practice to enhance the spiritual well-being of cancer patients. Further study should be done on a larger scale and across longer periods to ensure the sustainability of the result.
